Mayco SW141 White Matte is a high-fire glaze developed to create a smooth, even, matte white surface. When applied thinly at Cone 5/6, particularly over dark and speckled clay bodies, it may allow some of the body’s natural texture and speckles to remain visible. Additional coats can be applied to achieve a denser and more opaque white surface.

Application Notes

• Thin Application: When applied thinly at Cone 5/6, particularly over dark and speckled clay bodies, the natural color and speckles of the underlying body may remain partially visible.
• Opaque Application: Applying 3 or more coats is recommended to achieve a denser, whiter, and more opaque surface.
• Matte Surface: Under suitable firing conditions, it produces a smooth, even, and balanced matte surface.
• Cone 5/6 Behavior: Within the 1190°C - 1240°C range, it produces a controlled matte surface without noticeable running.
• Cone 10 Behavior: When fired between 1240°C and 1285°C, no major visible change in the surface appearance is expected, and the glaze may retain its matte white character.
• Coat Thickness: The opacity of the glaze increases with application thickness. Thin and thick applications may produce different visual results on the same clay body.
• Clay Body Selection: White clay bodies produce a cleaner and more even white surface, while thin applications over dark or speckled high-fire clay bodies may reveal more of the body’s natural character.
• Texture Effect: Regional variations in glaze thickness on textured, recessed, or raised forms may affect the intensity of the white color and the overall surface appearance.
• Glaze Combinations: When used with other high-fire glazes, chemical compatibility, color transitions, and potential flow behavior should be checked on a test tile.
• Food Use: When proper application and firing conditions are followed, it can be used on plates, bowls, mugs, and similar high-fire items intended to come into contact with food.
• Test Application: Preparing test tiles with different numbers of coats is recommended, particularly on dark and speckled clay bodies, to determine the desired opacity.
• Safety: Use appropriate personal protective equipment during application and ensure that the workspace is adequately ventilated.
