Technical Details and Application

Painting and Glazing

  • Underglaze Decoration: Refsan ready-to-use underglaze colors can be safely applied on both tile and ceramic bisque surfaces.
  • Glazing: Applying glaze enhances both the aesthetic appearance and the durability of the plate.
  • Ceramic Glazes: Ceramic bisque pieces should be glazed with ceramic glazes that generally mature between 1040°C and 1050°C. These glazes produce a smooth and durable surface.
  • Tile Glazes: Tile glazes are fired at approximately 900°C to 920°C and create a thinner and more delicate decorative surface.

Firing

Our products are carefully fired at 1050°C to achieve the bisque stage. This firing temperature improves structural durability and enhances the natural characteristics of the ceramic body. Variations in firing temperature or duration may influence the final surface appearance.

Decorative Use with Acrylic Paint

  • Acrylic paints can be used for decorative painting applications.
  • Warning: Acrylic paint is not suitable for food contact.
  • Applying protective varnish after painting is recommended to protect the surface.
  • Acrylic painting does not require firing and is intended for decorative use only.

Possible Variations in Handmade Products

Bisque ceramic products produced through slip casting or wheel forming may show slight differences in thickness or dimensions. Structural variations in casting may create thinner or thicker sections, reflecting the handcrafted nature of each piece.

Different clay bodies may also result in natural color variations. White clay typically produces lighter bisque tones, while red clay bodies provide darker and warmer tones.

Product Durability

After glazing and firing, ceramic products become more durable and resistant to external conditions. However, care and usage requirements may vary depending on the finishing technique used. Decorative surfaces created with acrylic paint may gradually wear over time.

Important Considerations During Glazing and Firing

  • Clean and completely dry the product before glazing.
  • Ceramic and tile glazes mature at different temperatures, so proper firing temperature should be selected.
  • After acrylic decoration, varnish can be applied for additional protection.
  • Different firing temperatures may affect bisque color, therefore preliminary testing is recommended.
