SP 1400 Crackle - Artistic High-Fire Glaze

SP 1400 Crackle is a high-fire effect glaze that creates controlled crackle patterns over a glossy, transparent surface. Its characteristic network of cracks develops during firing and cooling, reflecting light from different angles and giving the form a crystal-like, antique, and dynamic appearance.

Food Safe: This glaze is suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food when proper application and firing conditions are followed.

Application Notes

  • Crackle formation: The crackle pattern may begin to form during the kiln’s cooling stage and can continue developing for several days after the piece has been removed from the kiln.
  • Brush application: Applying even, uniform coats is recommended for a balanced surface. Allow the surface to dry completely between coats and apply each coat in a different direction.
  • Application thickness: Glaze thickness may affect the size and density of the cracks. Thicker applications may produce wider cracks, while thinner applications may create a finer, denser crackle pattern.
  • Enhancing the texture: On decorative pieces, the crackle network can be emphasized after firing by applying suitable decorating ink or diluted oxide and then wiping it from the surface.
  • Clay body selection: The crackle pattern appears clearer on white high-fire clay bodies. Its transparent structure allows the underlying clay color and underglaze decorations to remain visible.
  • Dipping and pouring: Depending on the required application consistency, 5-10% water may be added. Add water gradually and in a controlled manner.
  • Mixing: Mix the product thoroughly before application to achieve a uniform consistency.
Important Recommendation: The crackle pattern may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile before the main application is recommended.
