Application and Speckled Texture Notes

  • Speckled character: Dark mineral speckles that develop during firing may give each piece a natural, distinctive appearance. The density of the speckles may vary depending on application thickness.
  • Brush application: Applying 3 coats is recommended for a rich sand-beige tone and a pronounced speckled appearance. Allow the surface to dry completely between coats and apply each coat in a different direction.
  • Clay body selection: Sand and cream tones appear clearer on white high-fire clay bodies. Dark or grogged clay bodies may produce more rustic, substantial, and natural-looking surfaces.
  • Application thickness: Thicker applications may produce richer color and more pronounced speckles. With thinner applications, the underlying clay color may have a greater influence on the surface appearance.
  • Dipping and pouring: Depending on the required application consistency, 5-10% water may be added. Add water gradually and in a controlled manner.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of speckled and effect glazes may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile before the main application is recommended.
