SP 1378 Kilyos - Artistic High-Fire Glaze

SP 1378 Kilyos is a reactive, satin-matte high-fire glaze that produces smoky sea-green, muted grey, and light moss tones. Green-grey tones become richer across recessed and flat areas, while lighter moss transitions develop over edges, raised details, and textured areas to give the form natural movement. It creates deep, distinctive surfaces on modern, rustic, and handcrafted forms.

Food Safe: This glaze is suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food when proper application and firing conditions are followed.

Application and Kilyos Effect Notes

  • Reactive transitions: Green-grey tones may deepen where the glaze pools in recessed areas, while the glaze may become thinner over raised and elevated areas, producing lighter, variegated moss tones.
  • Brush application: Applying 3 coats is recommended for a rich, layered surface. Allow the surface to dry completely between coats and apply each coat in a different direction.
  • Clay body selection: Smoky green and muted grey transitions appear clearer on white high-fire clay bodies. Speckled, grogged, or dark clay bodies may produce more rustic and substantial-looking surfaces.
  • Application thickness: Thicker applications may deepen the green-grey tones and increase pooling. Lighter transitions may appear over thinly glazed edges and raised details.
  • Dipping and pouring: Depending on the required application consistency, 5-10% water may be added. Add water gradually and in a controlled manner.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of reactive and satin-matte glazes may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile before the main application is recommended.
