SP 1364 Hedgehog - Artistic High-Fire Glaze

SP 1364 Hedgehog is a satin-matte high-fire glaze that produces warm earth tones, dark brown hues, and natural mineral speckles. Dark speckles develop over the light-colored base, giving the surface a natural stone and mineral texture. It creates balanced, distinctive surfaces on organic, rustic, and nature-inspired forms.

Food Safe: This glaze is suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food when proper application and firing conditions are followed.

Application and Speckled Texture Notes

  • Speckled character: Dark mineral speckles that develop during firing may give each piece a natural, distinctive appearance. The density of the speckles may vary depending on application thickness.
  • Brush application: Applying 3 coats over a white clay body is recommended for a rich, pronounced mineral texture. Allow the surface to dry completely between coats and apply each coat in a different direction.
  • Mixing: Mix the product thoroughly before application to distribute the speckles and reactive pigments evenly across the surface. Stir again at regular intervals during application.
  • Clay body selection: Speckles appear more pronounced and contrasting on white high-fire clay bodies. Dark, speckled, or grogged clay bodies may produce more rustic and substantial-looking surfaces.
  • Application thickness: Thicker applications may deepen the base color and make the speckles appear denser. With thinner applications, the underlying clay color may have a greater influence on the surface appearance.
  • Dipping and pouring: Depending on the required application consistency, 5-10% water may be added. Add water gradually and in a controlled manner.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of speckled and mineral-textured glazes may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, firing schedule, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile before the main application is recommended.
