Application and Black Sea Effect Notes

  • Reactive transitions: The distribution of navy, black, and cobalt-blue tones may vary depending on application thickness, form, and firing conditions.
  • Brush application: Applying 3 coats is recommended for a rich, layered surface. Allow the surface to dry completely between coats and apply each coat in a different direction.
  • Pooling effect: The glaze may concentrate in recessed and indented areas, producing cobalt-blue variations. Darker navy and black tones may appear over edges and raised details.
  • Clay body selection: Cobalt-blue variations appear brighter and more pronounced on white high-fire clay bodies. Speckled, grogged, or iron-rich clay bodies may produce more rustic surfaces.
  • Flow: Due to its reactive character, the glaze may move in thicker applications. Controlled application near the base is especially recommended on vertical forms.
  • Mixing: Mix the product thoroughly before application to distribute the color- and effect-forming components evenly across the surface. Stir again at regular intervals during application.
  • Dipping and pouring: Depending on the required application consistency, 5-10% water may be added. Add water gradually and in a controlled manner.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of artistic and reactive glazes may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, firing schedule, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile before the main application is recommended.
