Application and Graphite Texture Notes

  • Texture character: After firing, it creates a smooth, satin-matte graphite surface with visual depth. Subtle metallic reflections may appear depending on the angle of the light.
  • Brush application: For a saturated and uniform smoky gray tone, applying 3 coats is recommended. Allow the surface to dry completely between coats and apply each coat in a different direction.
  • Clay body selection: The graphite tone appears clearer and more balanced on white high-fire clay bodies. Grogged or textured clay bodies may produce rawer and more rustic surfaces.
  • Number of coats: With thin or 1-2 coat applications, the underlying clay color may have a stronger influence, producing mistier and semi-opaque transitions.
  • Dipping and pouring: Depending on the required application consistency, 5-10% water may be added. Add water gradually and in controlled amounts.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of textured and satin-matte glazes may vary depending on application thickness, the clay body, kiln atmosphere, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile before the main application is recommended.
