SP 1550 Mars is a high-fire glaze inspired by the mineral textures of the Red Planet, distinguished by dramatic macro crystal formations that develop over a cream-beige base. Reactive star- and snowflake-like crystals form across the surface during firing, giving glazed pieces a deep, jewel-like appearance. Supplied as a ready-to-use, thick liquid, the product can produce especially pronounced crystalline effects on white high-fire and porcelain clay bodies.

Application Notes

• Product preparation: Mix the product thoroughly before application to distribute the crystal-forming components evenly throughout the liquid. Periodic remixing during application is recommended.
• Brush application: The product can be applied directly to a clean, dry bisque-fired surface. Apply in even coats and allow the surface to dry completely between coats.
• Application thickness: Apply a sufficient and even layer to achieve pronounced macro crystal formations. Crystals may appear weak with very thin applications, while excessive glaze movement may occur with overly thick applications.
• Clay body selection: On white high-fire and porcelain clay bodies, the cream-colored base and crystal formations may appear lighter, cleaner, and more contrasting.
• Crystal development: Crystal size and distribution depend on the peak temperature, hold time, and cooling rate. Controlled, slow cooling may support the development of larger crystals.
• Pouring and dipping: For these methods, the consistency can be adjusted by adding approximately 5-10% water. Add water gradually to preserve the glaze coverage.
• Vertical forms: Because macro-crystalline glazes may move during firing, a thinner and more controlled application is recommended near the base of the piece.
• Storage: Store the product in its tightly sealed original packaging at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
