S 1623 Batur - Artistic Low-Fire Glaze

S 1623 Batur is a distinctive artistic glaze that brings the depth of volcanic craters to glazed surfaces through ember-colored reflections and dramatic transitions over a dark base. Its combination of metallic textures and fiery tones creates a powerful, mysterious, and layered appearance. The effect may become more intense around form details, recessed areas, and sections with thicker application.

Not Food Safe: This glaze is not recommended for functional surfaces that come into contact with food, including plates, bowls, mugs, and similar items. It should be used on decorative pieces.

Application Notes

  • Brush application: The product is supplied ready to use at a consistency suitable for brush application. Applying 3 coats over white clay is recommended to achieve the characteristic appearance shown in the visual sample.
  • Coat application: Allow the surface to dry between coats and apply each coat in a different direction to achieve more balanced coverage.
  • Effect control: Small variations in the number of coats, application thickness, and firing temperature may affect the intensity of the metallic reflections and ember-colored transitions.
  • Dipping and spraying: For these methods, a controlled amount of water may be added according to the required application consistency. Excessive dilution may reduce the glaze’s opacity and artistic effects.
  • Clay body selection: White clay produces clearer metallic effects and warmer tones. Red, dark, or grogged clay bodies may produce darker and more rustic results.
  • Vertical forms: Due to its artistic and dynamic character, thicker applications may cause the glaze to flow. Leave an unglazed safety margin at the base and apply carefully on vertical surfaces.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of artistic glazes may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, firing schedule, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile is recommended, particularly on vertical forms and before batch production, to evaluate the glaze’s flow characteristics.
