OZZ GLAZE Nova - Low- & High-Fire Decorating Engobe

OZZ GLAZE Nova is an engobe developed for coloring and decorating clay surfaces before bisque firing and is suitable for both low- and high-fire firings. Its opaque character makes it suitable for coloring large surfaces, underglaze decoration and sgraffito techniques. After firing, tonal variations may occur depending on application thickness, clay body and firing temperature.

Decoration and Glaze Applications

OZZ GLAZE Nova can be used on its own for coloring large surfaces and also provides a suitable base for linear decoration, layered patterns and sgraffito techniques. After bisque firing, transparent or colored glazes can be applied over the engobe to create different surface effects. Compatibility between the selected glaze and the engobe should be tested before the main application.

Application Notes

• Mixing: Mix the product regularly before and during application to ensure an even distribution of the coloring components.
• Surface selection: Apply the product only to wet, leather-hard or completely dry unfired clay. Do not use it on bisque-fired surfaces.
• Surface preparation: The unfired clay surface must be clean, stable and free of dust before application.
• Coat application: For brush application, apply 2-3 even coats, allowing sufficient drying time between coats.
• Thickness control: Excessively thick or uneven applications may increase the risk of cracking, blistering or flaking during drying and firing.
• Sgraffito application: Allow the engobe to adhere to the surface before carving. Create the design once both the clay surface and the engobe have reached a suitable firmness.
• Dilution: For spray and dipping applications, add water in small increments, mix the product after each addition and avoid over-dilution.
• Firing effect: The tone and intensity of the final color may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, peak temperature and kiln atmosphere.
• Clay body selection: Color intensity and the final surface appearance may vary on light, dark or speckled clay bodies.
• Glaze application: A transparent or colored glaze may be applied over the engobe. Test the compatibility between the glaze and engobe on a test tile.
• Food contact: On surfaces intended to come into contact with food, use only a food-safe glaze and follow the glaze’s recommended firing schedule.
• Safety: Use appropriate personal protective equipment during application and ensure that the workspace is adequately ventilated.
• Storage: Store the product in its original container with the lid tightly closed, at room temperature and away from direct sunlight.
