Magnesium sulfate is an inorganic salt with the chemical formula MgSO₄, containing magnesium, sulfur and oxygen. It is usually found in the form of the heptahydrate sulfate mineral Epsomite or Epsom salt. Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is widely used as a desiccant in organic synthesis because of its affinity for water and its compatibility with most organic compounds.
