Seramiksir Gray AST 510 is an engobe developed to give white, red, and naturally colored clay bodies a uniform base in modern gray tones. It can be applied to leather-hard or completely dry, unfired clay surfaces and produces a natural, matte, and opaque appearance after firing. It can be used to cover the color of the clay body, smooth the surface, and prepare a balanced base for subsequent decoration or glazing.

Application Notes

• Surface Preparation: Apply the engobe to a clean, dust-free, unfired clay surface. Leather-hard surfaces may provide more consistent adhesion.
• Preparation: Mix the product thoroughly before application until all settled material is fully dispersed.
• Brush Application: It can be used for localized decorations or full-surface coverage. Apply each coat in a different direction to achieve even coverage.
• Dipping Application: This method can be preferred to achieve more uniform, smooth surfaces without brush marks.
• Sgraffito Application: Once the engobe reaches leather hardness, the surface can be carved to reveal the color of the clay underneath.
• Drying: Once application is complete, allow the piece to dry completely before bisque firing.
• Bisque Firing: Once drying is complete, fire the piece using a schedule suitable for the selected clay body.
• Glazing: The natural matte appearance can be preserved, or a transparent or colored glaze can be applied after bisque firing.
• Color Character: The clay color, application thickness, and firing temperature may affect the gray tone and opacity of the engobe.
• Clay Compatibility: Incompatible shrinkage rates between the engobe and clay body may cause cracking, blistering, or separation from the surface.
