OZZ GLAZE Atlas - Low- & High-Fire Decorating Engobe

OZZ GLAZE Atlas is a decorating engobe that creates deep black and smoky gray tones on clay surfaces and is suitable for both low- and high-fire firings. Its opaque character creates a pronounced contrast on light-colored clay bodies. It can be used for coloring large surfaces, linear decoration and sgraffito techniques.

Food Safety: Atlas Engobe is not food safe when used alone. On surfaces intended to come into contact with food, the engobe must be covered with a food-safe transparent or colored glaze and fired under the correct conditions.
Application Surface Warning: This product should only be applied to wet, leather-hard or completely dry unfired clay surfaces. It should not be applied to bisque-fired pieces. Bisque firing at 950°C is recommended after application.

Application Notes

  • Mixing: Mix the product regularly before and during application to ensure an even distribution of the coloring components.
  • Surface selection: Apply the product only to wet, leather-hard or completely dry unfired clay. Do not use it on bisque-fired surfaces.
  • Surface preparation: The unfired clay surface must be clean, stable and free of dust before application.
  • Coat application: For brush application, apply 2-3 even coats, allowing sufficient drying time between coats.
  • Thickness control: Excessively thick or uneven applications may increase the risk of cracking, blistering or flaking during drying and firing.
  • Sgraffito application: Allow the engobe to adhere to the surface before carving. Create the design once both the clay surface and the engobe have reached a suitable firmness.
  • Dilution: For spray and dipping applications, add water in small increments, mix the product after each addition and avoid over-dilution.
  • Firing effect: The intensity of the black and smoky gray tones may vary depending on application thickness, clay body and firing temperature.
  • Clay body selection: Light-colored clay bodies create stronger contrast, while the final color and visibility may vary on darker bodies.
  • Glaze application: A transparent or colored glaze may be applied over the engobe. Test the compatibility between the glaze and engobe on a test tile before the main application.
  • Food contact: On surfaces intended to come into contact with food, use only a food-safe glaze and follow the glaze’s recommended firing schedule.
  • Safety: Use appropriate personal protective equipment during application and ensure that the workspace is adequately ventilated.
  • Storage: Store the product in its original container with the lid tightly closed, at room temperature and away from direct sunlight.
Important Recommendation: The intensity of the black and smoky gray tones, as well as the appearance of the glaze applied over the engobe, may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, bisque temperature, glaze selection and final firing schedule. Preparing test tiles with different coat thicknesses and glaze combinations is recommended before the main application.
