Technical Details and Application

Painting and Glazing

  • Underglaze Decoration: Refsan ready to use underglaze colors can be safely applied on both tile and ceramic bisque surfaces.
  • Glazing: Glazing enhances both the aesthetic appearance and durability of the product.
  • Ceramic Glazes: Ceramic glazes typically mature between 1040°C and 1050°C, creating a smooth and durable surface.
  • Tile Glazes: Tile glazes are generally fired between 900°C and 920°C and provide a thin decorative finish.

Firing

Our products are carefully fired at 1050°C to reach the bisque stage. This firing temperature improves structural durability and strengthens the ceramic body. Different firing schedules and temperatures may influence the final surface appearance.

Decorative Use with Acrylic Paint

  • Acrylic paints can be used for decorative painting.
  • Warning: Acrylic paint is not suitable for food contact.
  • Applying protective varnish after painting is recommended.
  • Acrylic decoration does not require firing and is suitable for decorative purposes only.

Possible Variations in Handmade Products

Bisque ceramic products produced by slip casting or wheel forming may show slight variations in thickness and dimensions. Structural differences may occur depending on the casting process and reflect the handcrafted nature of each piece.

Different clay bodies may produce natural color variations. White clay generally produces lighter bisque tones while red clay bodies create darker and warmer tones.

Product Durability

After glazing and firing ceramic products become durable and resistant to everyday use. However care requirements may vary depending on the finishing method used. Decorative acrylic finishes may gradually wear over time compared to glazed ceramic surfaces.

Important Considerations During Glazing and Firing

  • Clean and completely dry the product before glazing.
  • Ceramic and tile glazes mature at different temperatures therefore the correct firing temperature should be selected.
  • After acrylic decoration varnish can be applied to protect the surface.
  • Different firing temperatures may influence bisque color therefore preliminary testing is recommended.
