Intended Use

Engobes are used to alter the natural color of a clay body, balance its surface appearance, and prepare a suitable base for subsequent decoration or glazing. When applied on its own, AST 013 creates a matte, opaque, and even Aegean blue surface.

Application Notes

• Product preparation: Before application, mix the product thoroughly until it reaches a uniform consistency.
• Surface preparation: The surface must be clean, dry, dust-free, and free from grease before application.
• Brush application: For localized decoration and controlled applications, apply the engobe in thin, even coats. Allow the surface to dry between coats.
• Dipping application: The dipping method may be preferred to achieve a smoother, more even, and continuous surface.
• Application timing: For the most balanced result, application to a leather-hard clay body is recommended. It can also be used on completely dry, unfired surfaces.
• Glossy surface: To achieve a glossy appearance, apply a suitable transparent or colored glaze after bisque firing and fire the piece a second time.
• Clay body effect: The color may appear lighter and clearer on white clay and warmer and darker on red clay.
