A-130 Lava - Artistic Low-Fire Glaze

A-130 Lava is a reactive artistic low-fire glaze that creates a porous, raised, and volcanic surface over light beige and stone gray tones. Its three-dimensional texture gives surfaces the appearance of natural stone and cooled lava. It produces particularly pronounced surface effects on decorative, textured, and relief forms.

Not Food Safe: This glaze is not recommended for food-contact surfaces such as plates, bowls, mugs, and similar functional ware. It should be used for decorative applications.

Application Notes

  • Texture development: For pronounced volcanic foam and raised surface effects, 3-4 coats are recommended. Thinner applications may produce a more limited texture.
  • Brush application: Allow the surface to dry completely between coats and apply each coat in a different direction. Avoid excessive glaze buildup in specific areas.
  • Reactive character: Bubble size, expansion, and pore density may vary depending on application thickness, kiln atmosphere, and firing schedule.
  • Clay body selection: Stone-like tones may appear clearer on white and light-colored low-fire clay bodies. The volcanic texture may become more pronounced on relief and highly textured forms.
  • Preparation: Mix the glaze thoroughly before use to ensure even distribution of the components responsible for the textured effect.
  • Kiln placement: Due to the possibility of expansion and glaze movement, leave sufficient space between glazed pieces, the kiln shelf, and surrounding ware.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of reactive and highly textured low-fire glazes may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, and cooling rate. Testing on a sample tile before the main application is recommended.
