992 Red Grogged Ceramic Clay Body

992 Red Grogged Ceramic Clay Body is a vacuum-packed, plastic ceramic clay suitable for creating pronounced surface textures through combing, scraping, and smoothing techniques. After firing, the body develops deep red and natural earthy tones, helping create strong surface contrast, particularly in oxide glaze applications.

Applications & Recommendations

Hand Building

Suitable for creating planters, vases, sculptures, and decorative objects using slab building, coil building, or free-form modeling techniques. Its grogged composition helps support large and thick forms during shaping.

Press Forming

Can be used in mold-pressing applications when suitable moisture and pressure conditions are provided.

Combing & Scraping Techniques

The surface can be combed and scraped in a controlled manner using a metal scraper or similar ceramic tools. These techniques help create recessed, raised, and naturally textured surfaces.

Oxide Glaze Wiping Techniques

Oxide-based or transparent glaze applied to the textured surface may be carefully wiped from raised areas using a damp sponge. Glaze remaining in the recessed areas can create darker tones, while exposed sections retain the matte red earthen appearance of the clay body.

Outdoor Ceramic Forms

Suitable for outdoor pieces such as large planters and sculptures. However, final durability depends on wall thickness, firing temperature, water absorption, glaze application, and conditions of use.

Application Technique

Surface Preparation

When the formed piece reaches the leather-hard stage, the surface may be smoothed, scraped, or combed in selected directions using a metal scraper. This process creates a controlled roughness and texture.

Glaze Application

A transparent glaze containing copper oxide or a similar surface treatment may be applied to the prepared surface. Excess glaze should be carefully wiped from flat and raised areas with a damp sponge while leaving a small amount in the recesses.

Final Firing

After glaze firing between 1040°C and 1060°C, recessed areas may develop a darker and deeper appearance. Areas from which the glaze has been removed reveal the natural matte texture of the red clay body.

SURFACE & OXIDE EFFECT NOTICE
The color and contrast produced by oxide glazes may vary depending on the oxide type, glaze thickness, amount of wiping, kiln atmosphere, and firing schedule. Test tiles should be prepared before full-scale production.
SHRINKAGE NOTICE
Shrinkage may vary between 7% and 10% depending on the firing temperature. This rate should be considered during the design stage for molds, lids, interlocking parts, and pieces requiring dimensional accuracy.
DRYING NOTICE
Large and thick pieces should be dried slowly and evenly, away from strong air currents, to reduce the risk of cracking. Areas with different wall thicknesses should be made as uniform as possible.

Product Advantages

Natural Red Earthen Appearance

The deep red tone developed after firing creates a warm and distinctive appearance on unglazed and partially glazed surfaces.

Suitable for Textured Surfaces

Its grogged body supports the creation of pronounced and natural surfaces using combing, scraping, and smoothing techniques.

Contrast Effect with Oxide Glazes

A strong sense of depth and shadow can be achieved between the dark glaze retained in recessed areas and the exposed red clay surface.

Supports Large Forms

The grog content helps support large and thick ceramic pieces during forming.

Versatile Forming Techniques

Suitable for hand building, press forming, surface combing, and artistic modeling applications.

Before full-scale production, testing is recommended for forming, drying, shrinkage, oxide and glaze compatibility, water absorption, and firing performance.
