SP 1524 Apatite - Artistic Crystalline High-Fire Glaze

SP 1524 Apatite is an artistic crystalline high-fire glaze that develops pale crystalline transitions over blue tones. Its fluid character may cause color and glaze to accumulate in recessed and curved areas of the form. After firing, the surface develops a glossy, dynamic, and crystalline appearance.

Food Safe: This glaze is suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food when proper application and firing conditions are followed.
Flow Warning: This product is a fluid artistic glaze. On vertical forms, sufficient unglazed clearance should be left near the base to prevent the glaze from reaching the kiln shelf during firing.

Application Notes

  • Mixing: Stir the product thoroughly before and during application to ensure even distribution of the crystal-forming components.
  • Coat application: Apply the glaze in even coats and carefully control the thickness across the entire form.
  • Crystal behavior: Crystal size, density, and distribution may vary depending on application thickness, peak firing temperature, and cooling rate.
  • Flow control: Consider that the glaze may move downward on vertical forms and leave areas near the base unglazed.
  • Kiln shelf protection: Fire pieces on a protective catch plate or suitable kiln shelf separator to protect the kiln shelf from possible glaze runs.
  • Thinning: For spraying, dipping, or pouring applications, add water gradually in small amounts and avoid excessive dilution.
  • Form effect: Glaze may accumulate in recessed, curved, and horizontal areas, producing deeper blue tones, crystal clusters, and visible flow patterns.
  • Clay body selection: Blue and crystalline transitions may appear more prominent on white and light-colored high-fire clay bodies, while results may vary on darker bodies.
  • Glaze combinations: Before combining with other glazes, test chemical compatibility, flow behavior, and crystal development on a test tile.
  • Care: Hand washing is recommended to preserve the glossy finish and crystalline surface character.
  • Safety: Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used during application, and the work area should be adequately ventilated.
  • Storage: Keep the container tightly closed, store at room temperature, and protect from direct sunlight.
Important Recommendation: The intensity of the blue tones, crystal size and distribution, glaze flow, and surface gloss may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, peak firing temperature, kiln atmosphere, and cooling schedule. Testing on both vertical and horizontal test tiles is recommended before full-scale application.
