SP 1522 Diopside - Artistic High-Fire Glaze

SP 1522 Diopside is an artistic high-fire glaze that develops light green opaque crystals over a clear pistachio green transparent base. The glossy underlying surface combines with crystals that display matte and satin characteristics in certain areas, giving ceramic forms a natural stone appearance and mineralogical depth.

Food Safety: This glaze contains no toxic substances. However, chemical resistance may decrease in areas where crystals densely cover the surface and create a rough texture. Therefore, decorative and artistic use is recommended as the primary application.

Application Notes

  • Crystal development: Areas of thin and thick application can be created on the same surface to enhance crystal formation.
  • Graduated application: On vertical forms, applying the glaze more thickly toward the upper sections and gradually thinner toward the bottom may allow the crystals to disperse in the direction of flow, creating rain-like transitions.
  • Thick application: Excessively thick application across the entire surface may cause the crystals to merge and form a rough crystalline matte surface.
  • Fluidity: The glaze may become more fluid when applied in three or more coats. Sufficient safety clearance should be left near the base of the piece.
  • Crazing risk: Glaze crazing may occur depending on the compatibility between the clay body and glaze. Compatibility testing is recommended before application.
  • Clay body selection: White porcelain and light-colored stoneware clay bodies can produce more vivid green tones, while darker bodies may create deeper and more mysterious results.
Important Recommendation: The appearance of crystal-effect glazes may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, firing schedule, and cooling rate. Testing on both vertical and horizontal test tiles is recommended before full-scale application.
