SP 1520 Rock Crystal - Artistic Crystalline High-Fire Glaze

SP 1520 Rock Crystal is an artistic crystalline high-fire glaze distinguished by pearl-white, opaque, and occasionally matte crystal formations developing over a transparent off-white base. The contrast between the glossy base surface and satin-matte crystals gives forms a deep appearance reminiscent of frozen water and natural mineral layers. Crystal density, transparency, and surface texture may vary depending on application thickness.

Not Food Safe: This glaze is not recommended for food-contact surfaces such as plates, bowls, mugs, and similar functional items. It should be used for decorative pieces.

Pure White
Midnight Blue
Sand Beige / Stone
Matte Black
Slate Grey

Application Notes

  • Graduated application: Areas of varying thickness should be created across the same surface to encourage crystal development. On vertical forms, the glaze may be applied more heavily toward the upper areas and gradually thinned toward the bottom.
  • Crystal density: Crystal formation may become denser as application thickness increases. In excessively thick areas, the crystals may merge and create a more matte, opaque, and slightly textured surface.
  • Flow control: With applications of three or more coats, the glaze may become increasingly fluid. Leave sufficient unglazed space near the base to prevent the glaze from running onto the kiln shelf.
  • Transparent effect: Due to its semi-transparent character, the glaze may partially reveal the color of the underlying clay body. Pearl-white crystals appear more pronounced on white porcelain and light-colored high-fire clay bodies.
  • Crazing effect: Glaze crazing may develop depending on the clay body, application thickness, and cooling conditions.
  • Care: Hand washing is recommended to preserve the appearance of the crystalline texture and glossy base surface.
  • Safety: Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used during application, and the working area should be adequately ventilated.
  • Storage: Keep the container closed and store away from direct sunlight. If thickening or settling occurs, mix thoroughly before application and strain if necessary.
Important Recommendation: Crystal distribution, flow, surface texture, and transparency may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln firing schedule, loading arrangement, and cooling rate. Testing on both vertical and horizontal test tiles is recommended before the main application.
