SP 1509 Etna - Artistic High-Fire Glaze

SP 1509 Etna is an artistic high-fire glaze that transitions from a glossy surface with white variations to rich, deep red tones. As application thickness increases, the red character becomes stronger, while thinner areas may develop lighter, semi-transparent effects with white variations. On textured surfaces, edges, and recessed areas, it creates tonal variations that give the form a strong sense of depth.

Not Food Safe: This glaze is not recommended for food-contact surfaces such as plates, bowls, mugs, and similar functional items. It should be used for decorative pieces.
Flow Warning: This glaze has a highly fluid character. Its tendency to run may increase as firing temperature and application thickness increase. A wide unglazed safety margin should be left near the base of vertical forms, and the kiln shelf should be protected with a catch plate.

Application Notes

  • Thin application: May create a lighter, dynamic, and semi-transparent surface where white and red tones appear together.
  • Thick application: The red color becomes richer and deeper. Glaze flow may also increase significantly as application thickness increases.
  • Texture effect: On textured surfaces, corners, and raised areas, the natural color of the clay body may remain partially visible, creating a three-dimensional effect.
  • Flow control: A wide unglazed area should be left near the base of the piece. For thick applications, a catch plate or kiln shelf protection should be used.
  • Consistency adjustment: For dipping or spray gun applications, water should be added gradually and in a controlled manner to avoid over-diluting the product.
  • Clay body selection: Due to its semi-transparent character, the color of the clay body may affect the final appearance. Red-white transitions may appear more pronounced on white and light-colored clay bodies.
  • Care: Hand washing is recommended to preserve the gloss and color transitions of the artistic surface.
  • Safety: Gloves, a mask, and appropriate personal protective equipment should be used during application, and the working area should be adequately ventilated.
  • Storage: Keep the container closed and store away from direct sunlight. If thickening or settling occurs, mix thoroughly before application and strain if necessary.
Important Recommendation: The red tone, white variations, and amount of glaze flow may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln firing schedule, loading arrangement, and cooling rate. Due to the high risk of glaze flow, testing on vertical test tiles is recommended before the main application.
