SP 1387 Heliodor - Artistic High-Fire Glaze

SP 1387 Heliodor is an artistic high-fire glaze that develops reactive golden yellow and amber reflections over a dark brown base. Deep chocolate brown tones become more pronounced in areas where the glaze pools, while raised surfaces and edges may develop lighter, metallic, and warmer color transitions. Its glossy character gives ceramic forms a layered and light-responsive appearance.

Food Safe: This glaze is suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food when proper application and firing conditions are followed.
Fluidity Warning: Due to its reactive and highly vitrified character, this glaze may flow in thick applications. Sufficient unglazed space should be left near the base of vertical forms, and the kiln shelf should be protected with a suitable protective plate.

Application Notes

  • Recessed areas: Dark chocolate brown and smoky tones may become more dominant in recessed and concave areas where the glaze pools.
  • Raised surfaces: Golden yellow and amber tones may become more pronounced along edges, raised details, and areas with thinner glaze coverage.
  • Thickness effect: Lighter and warmer reflections may dominate in thinner coats, while thicker areas may become darker and develop greater gloss.
  • Metallic appearance: The reactive surface may produce bronze, gold, and amber reflections that shift depending on the angle of light.
  • Form effect: Curved and textured surfaces can enhance the contrast between the dark base and lighter metallic transitions.
  • Flow control: With thick applications, the risk of the glaze moving toward the base may increase. Sufficient unglazed space should be left near the bottom of the piece.
  • Consistency adjustment: For pouring or dipping applications, water should be added gradually and in a controlled manner to avoid over-thinning the product.
  • Clay body selection: The color and chemical composition of the high-fire clay body may affect the appearance of the brown base and golden reflections.
  • Care: Hand washing is recommended to preserve the metallic reflections and surface gloss.
  • Safety: Gloves, an apron, and appropriate personal protective equipment should be used during application, and the work area should be adequately ventilated.
  • Storage: Keep the container tightly closed and away from direct sunlight. If settling or thickening occurs, mix thoroughly before application and strain if necessary.
Important Recommendation: The intensity of the gold and amber reflections, surface gloss, color depth, and fluidity may vary depending on application thickness, clay body, kiln firing schedule, kiln loading arrangement, and cooling rate. Preparing vertical and horizontal test tiles with different application thicknesses is recommended before full-scale application.
