SP 1125 Tenmoku Brown (Stoneware) Ceramic Glaze

SP 1125 Tenmoku Brown is a deep and mysterious glaze that brings the Tenmoku tradition—one of the most noble glazes in Far Eastern ceramic art—to stoneware firing temperatures. Thanks to its high iron content, it offers rich dark chocolate and black tones. On sharp corners, edges, and relief details, it beautifully "breaks" into warm caramel-rust tones, emphasizing the form's volume. Shining with a glassy texture under light, this glaze creates a rustic depth in modern ceramics.

✅ Food Safety: This glaze is food-safe and non-toxic. Thanks to its high-temperature (stoneware) durability, it is highly robust for kitchen use and can be safely preferred for tea bowls, large serving platters, and modern dinnerware.

Application and Effect Notes

  • Layer Count and Effect: For brush applications, applying 3 coats is highly recommended. As the glaze layer thickens, darker black tones dominate. In thinner areas or on highlights and "S" curves of the form, the classic Tenmoku reddish-caramel breaking effects reveal themselves.
  • Fluidity Character: Tenmoku glazes can be quite fluid and mobile at high temperatures. While this movement enriches the variegation and depth, precautions should be taken against running on vertical forms.
  • Clay Selection: It yields the clearest and most vibrant results on white stoneware bodies. When applied to dark or iron-bearing clays, it takes on a much deeper, more masculine character.
  • Preparation: Always stir or shake the product thoroughly before use to prevent heavy iron pigments from settling at the bottom and to ensure a smooth finish.
